The popular Owonifari Market at Oshodi which was demolished in the early hours of today was under the supervision of the Lagos state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and other law enforcement agencies.
Oshodi, which was cleaned up in 2009 under the Babatunde Fashola-led administration has since then degenerated into a spot for street traders and urchins, posing a serious threat to lives and property in the area.
According to a statement by the state commissioner of information, Steve Ayorinde, the market would be shut due to security challenges in the area. Also, shutting the market would enable the state commence the transformation of the Oshodi bus stop to an “ultra-modern” bus terminal.
